CHAPTER EIGHT
Grace
I could be delusional, but I think I might be good at this job.
The beautiful office, the flowers, the constant flow of snacks that other people fetch for me, and the fact that I have a boyfriend responsible for all of it are really helping me feel good about my dubious skill set as a stager.
The fact that I can see Buckâs construction trailer from my window doesnât hurt, either.
Iâm nibbling on a Reeseâs and sipping on a Diet Dr. Pepper and feeling in the flow when suddenly, my office door opens abruptly.
In walks Buck, looking like somebody pissed in his Cheerios.
Uh-oh. The jig is up. I shove the Reeseâs into my face because I know Iâm about to get fired and this is the last bit of sustenance Iâll see for a while.
Swallowing, I ask, âHi! Are you okay?â
Buck is pacing the room now like a caged animal. Shit. Heâs super mad about my stupid lie. God, why did I lie?
âI can explain,â I say, standing, my stomach in my throat. Iâm about to lose it all. The office, the snacks, the assistant, the jobâ¦my brand new boyfriend.
I fucked everything up, and on top of that, we wonât be friends after this. I can see that right now. Iâve betrayed him, and he will never forgive me for leaving his project behind.
Buck marches up to me and stops an inch from my face. âYou,â he says, low and soft, gently tipping my chin up to meet my eyes, âdo not have to explain anything.â
I suck in a shuddering breath. Being this close to him and knowing weâre about to break up makes a knot appear in my throat. I am so close to crying I could pinch myself. I refuse. I donât need to cry; I just need to admit what I did. But for some reason, Buck doesnât want me to do that.
âI donât?â
âNo,â he rumbles, his eyes scanning my face. âBecause I believe in you, Grace.â
âS-so, youâre not mad? Youâre not breaking up with me?â
Buckâs beautiful forehead furrows in confusion. âWhy would I do that?â
âB-because you look pissed, and I thoughtââ
âBabe, no.â Without another word his lips are on mine, and I melt into his kiss. His mouth claims me, and his arms hold me tight against him. He smells like wood shavings and his natural spice, and Iâm intoxicated by the sheer intensity of this man.
Iâm surely a mess when he pulls away from the kiss to say, âI just needed to see you,â he says softly, eyeing me like a precious jewel, carefully smoothing my hair with one big, meaty hand.
Oh my heart. Heâs going to tear it to pieces.
âItâs wonderful to be seen by you,â I say, blushing at how dumb that sounds.
The anger I saw a second ago seems to have abated, and his whole demeanor has changed. Buck closes his eyes and brushes his nose against the tip of my nose, a low hum emanating from his throat.
âTell me some good news,â he says.
